Florian Tiles Studio - Producing Hand-painted Ceramic Tiles

Gilly Goschen

I am sad to report that Gilly passed away on Monday 24th May 2021.

Gilly was the guiding spirit for Florian Tiles and therefore the online shop will be closed until further notice while we work out the way forward.

Thank you for your support and custom over the years.

We have been producing high quality hand-decorated ceramic wall tiles since the 1960's, firstly in Saxmundham, Suffolk, and since 1972 in Thomas Hardy's countryside in Dorset, England.

We are a family run business specialising in producing unusual and imaginative designs on tiles, using well known and local artists. These are mainly wall tiles for kitchens and bathrooms and can also be made into gift items such as tea pot stands, table mats, clocks, cheeseboards and pictures.

We first make a silk screen from the original artwork, individually hand-screen-print onto a bisque tile and hand-paint with underglaze ceramic colours. The tile is then glazed with a transparent glaze and fired at over 1000 degrees centigrade in our kiln. This traditional method produces a rich and subtle effect of colour not possible with transfers.

As well as producing our own extensive range of designs, we also make tiles to order to customers' own requirements either as a one-off repeated single tile, or as panels and murals.

Included amongst our commissions are special tiles made to match a Pugin wall paper for a Speaker of the House of Commons' apartment, two large tile panels at Dorchester Railway Station for the local brewery, and two further panels for the Children's Unit at Dorchester Hospital. We were also commissioned to design a series of tiled columns for a hotel swimming pool project in New Milton.

Please contact Gilly Goschen or Peter Gray for further information.
